The expectations on the human side of ER are wholly different than on the vet side. “Fix my cat and make sure he never hurts again!” is the unsaid (sometimes said) thought. Good job keeping your head and scrubbing it right away. I tell my clients routinely that I’d rather get by by three dogs than by one cat. And I remember one of my rotation-mates getting bit by a frantic cat as we were carrying it to ICU. She, too, had to visit the ER, and our attending was royally miffed that she wasn’t given any pain meds. Apparently there is a script that all 4th Yr. students must follow, and you’re following right along!

I’m afraid that karma has come around to bite me. I got called in on ophtho ER my first night and took in an equine patient and now I start and end my day in the barn every day! Surely someone is trying to torture me. It’s good to hear that the negative stuff will fade because right now, I can’t think of a single positive experience I’ve had in the barn…

After you’ve been a DVM for a while, you’ll forget the bad stuff about the barn and remember the good stuff and especially the funny stuff, mostly because you’ll tell the funny stories to your staff and clients so many times that the negative stuff kind of fades away. Good luck in ophtho. I’m convinced that at the university level, half of ophtho is knowing the eye, the other half is dressing the part.

Good move taking the dentistry elective. And the long and exhausting time-frame will prepare you for tough dentals. Sometimes it’ll take that long when you get a stomatitis case followed by a 10 year old Schnauzer that’s never seen a vet.

Glad you enjoyed the break. Breaks were always a welcome time, I recall. And my wife and I got married in the middle of vet school (we were classmates, no less), so your stories bring back fun memories for me.
